Nothing I hate more than a FitBit issue, the thing is they are regular and their hardware along side with their software is a total mess. We’re talking Britney dropping the baby, while just above Michael Jackson dangles Blanket over the railing mess.
For some abstract reason, my FitBit Ionic has decided not to synchronise for four days, although randomly was nice enough to send my steps for just this morning and nothing else.
And there has been an update waiting for a while now, I get tetchy when these things come out since the last one nearly bricked my 350€ watch.
But since the only way to fix this problem is delete the association, delete the FitBit app, delete all data on said FitBit and repeat this until eventually something sticks, I figured I might as well risk it.
Right now the job is in progress, 30 minutes for 6% download. Great start FitBit.
If you’re thinking of buying one of these for the notifications and the usefulness, you might as well just not. Notifs barely work at the best of times, and if you don’t believe me, when the FitBit community site actually works (#can’tseeitwedon’thaveaproblem), you can see it for yourself in the irate postings.
On top of the software being a total shit show, the hardware is totally ugh. If you own a FitBit be prepared to replace the watch straps every 6 months, because what you’ve bought is an expensive turd, and the turd gold coloured spray is a good 50€ each run.
Also good spot, this rant is after I’ve been doing this shit since 4h and I’m tired.
After a bit of a go on my own terms using my own server, it’s been a good run with the server from DigitalOcean but since my servers on there have become exclusively for business usage.
The problem with that, is I have to hand the account over to myself, the business and justify the business expense.
So because bureaucracy is as it is, I have to seperate the personal server from the bank of business ones. And because my DreamHost account is personal, I started up a DreamHost VPS for this site and EC.JE.
During this week, I’ve got to do the manual part, setting it all up, getting the plugins ready and moving the content. At least the images are still hosted on a CDN service.
A while back I registered a domain vx.sg, the name of the blog was Version X (eg Version 10) because it was my first folley with using Ghost as a blogging platform.
I wasn’t really feeling Ghost to be fair, and it was legitimately the 10th incarnation of my blogging activities.
However, since spinning down the old Ghost server, the domain has remained unused. Until today, since the 10th version of my BBS is also now coming to age, it seems apt to use this domain for what it’s designed for. And I do like it myself.
I’ve also put together a small website on there for updates and of course, on the news server we now have a local group called mmn.v10.
I’ll also post to my blog here about changing up the BBS, what I add, etc.
I’ve been having a bit of an off week, as in when I get home there is literally nothing I am doing. Normally, I would hit up my usual haunts such as Monochrome, The WeLL and SDF. Oh and of course my own BBS, cos I ain’t rude like.
However, in my drained of life energy state, it’s been hard to not go to bed at 18h when I just arrived home. One would assume that I can fix this easily, which is not the case.
But having the chance to pop my head back on to my accounts here, I’ve regained some ability to pull myself back in to the realm of text. I’ve been here for a while to be fair, on sdf I’m sure it was the mid 2000s and mono, well, here ye go :
Like that kind of dedication, mind, not that many hours during that time, is nearly LiveJournal level.
If anybody has suggestions of text based boards or software that I can install on a wayward laptop with Ubuntu and extra time, I am more than happy to know.
In my endless quest to go full on secure, move away from the GMail, AOL Mail (I genuinely still have my AOL account, I just don’t use it like a sane human being in 2019) and they Yahoos, I weighed up my options last night and I went for it.
I was aiming to use Tutanota, but unfortunately for now it doesn’t have DKIM for custom domains and any ability to import old emails. The old email thing is really quite important for me as I tend to drop an email account and get screwed by not having an email from 2005. No jokes.
After deciding my needs, I in the end, went to ProtonMail, it’s more on the expensive side of what I wanted to spend since after balancing out what domains I was bringing, how many and the amount of aliases/users I needed, I chose the Visionary plan.
I was able to bring over my mmn.on.ca email address (my public PGP key is here) and the majority of my short domain addresses quickly, but the real sticking point is ec.je. The problem with this domain is, unsurprisingly Google. I use my account there for everything, my Google Account, Play Store, etc. I’m dreading the switch over process to it taking my business domain over and what kind of drama that could possibly ensue.
It’s been a long old three weeks my friend, my bank account being more bare than my cupboards. I have had to get very, very creative in what I have been eating.
Then there is the not being able to smoke thing, mix that with not eating and quite frankly I’m shocked that people around me still be breathing. Although I did throw a pot across the room, because it dared not to stay on the shelf.
Although I have planned to go crazy in Burger King later tonight, whether or not I can afford it, I do not care. One needs a burger and bacon fries.
